New Johnny Cash documentary details his spiritual redemption

Sarah Robsdottir - published on 12/05/22

The film invites us to "discover the story of the spiritual quest of a music legend."

Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon will be released exclusively in theaters December 5, 6 and 7 by Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company. The anticipated documentary brings together country music stars Marty Stuart, Wynonna Judd, Tim McGraw and many others to discuss the period in the musician’s life when he was at the top of his career professionally but drowning in a private hell of depression and drug addiction personally.

“There’s no lonelier place on earth for a man to be … than separated from God,” Cash’s distinctive voice explains in what the trailer describes as never-heard-before interviews with the Man in Black himself.

The documentary paints a picture of Cash’s genuine Christian upbringing, which was inspired particularly by his older brother Jack, who had wanted to become a pastor but died tragically at the age of 14 while trying to earn money for his family.

The film also details Cash’s rise to stardom, playing for sold-out crowds in world-class venues such as the Grand Ole Opry — and the many temptations and distractions that accompanied this fame.

“He faced himself,” the singer Sheryl Crow explains about Cash’s spiritual reformation in the film’s trailer. “He faced his temptations and his worldliness. And he came out wanting to be right with God.”

Country singer Greg Laurie adds to Crow’s point: “It’s a biblical precedent that God uses complicated people.”

The documentary’s trailer closes with a flickering photo montage of Cash smiling and carrying his Bible into church. Tickets for Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon are available online.
