The Bible recounts a number of times when the people of Israel were challenged to pray for relief from drought.

In the Old Testament, the people of Israel suffered many droughts, some lasting several years. They suffered much, but each time God would use the drought to call his people back to prayer.

For example, King Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord and implored God’s mercy upon his people.

When the heavens are closed so that there is no rain, because they have sinned against you, but they pray toward this place and praise your name, and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them, listen in heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel.

2 Chronicles 6:26-27

He then pronounced this simple prayer, which could be used in any time of drought, asking God to have mercy on his people and grant rain to the land.

Lord, give rain upon this land of yours
which you have given to your people.

2 Chronicles 6:27
