DUPREE’s new single is an affirmation of faith wrapped in a pop melody

The mother-son duo DUPREE continues to gain momentum with their new single "He Tells Me (Who I Am)."

DUPREE, the mother-son duo taking the Christian music scene by storm, is back with a brand new single. Released on July 6, “He Tells Me (Who I Am)” is an affirmation of the faith wrapped in an excellent pop melody.

Dylan and Lauren Dupree, who write all their own songs, have been keeping a prolific pace since the world pandemic has slowed down. “He Tells Me (Who I Am)” is DUPREE’s second single of 2022, and comes after the band released two full albums in 2021. These included a fantastic original album, Never Forget, and At Christmas Time, which breathes new life into holiday classics while adding a few new ones to the songbook.

Music and lyrics

“He Tells Me (Who I Am)” leans more on the pop side of their pop/rock style, but Dylan’s deft guitar work can still be heard after the first chorus. In this pop song, Dylan doesn’t get too intense with the solo work, which was a nice choice for the material. While we always appreciate Dylan’s dizzying talent on the fretboard, it’s just as impressive to see a musician make a stylistic choice to not lean on his virtuosic touch in every song.

Besides, DUPREE has plenty of talent to go around. The pair shows off some excellent voice work on the track, boasting complementary timbres that can only come from a familial similarity in vocal tone. When singing together they produce a comforting tone that almost sounds too perfect to be real.

While there’s a bunch of great things going on in the music, the song really shines in its lyrics. “He Tells Me (Who I Am)” is a song about finding one’s purpose through God’s guidance and holding firm to your faith in the face of opposition. Of the song, DUPREE wrote:

“If anyone tries to tell you that you are not valid or that you are not good enough, that is your time to remember that you are a child of God made in His image. If Jesus puts a desire on someone’s heart to do something, then that person should listen to the calling regardless of what anyone else thinks. Some things are meant to be left between you and our Father in Heaven.”

Live performances

If you haven’t heard much of DUPREE yet, now’s the time to get on the bandwagon. In 2022, DUPREE is scheduled to start touring in earnest, beginning with a two-night Catholic concert for the Knights of Columbus in Cooper City, Florida, on September 9 and 10.

This event is a charity concert put on by Schott Communities, an extension of the ministry of the Archdiocese of Miami. All proceeds from the two shows will go towards providing for the needs of persons who are deaf or who are physically or intellectually challenged in South Florida.

After they’ve rocked out in Cooper City, DUPREE is excited to announce that they will begin touring through the United States this fall. They don’t have the tour dates listed yet, but they will be updated to the DUPREE website once they’re fastened down.

Follow DUPREE to get updates on all upcoming tour locations.

What? Are you still pining for one of Dylan’s phenomenal guitar solos? Then check out this live video of Dylan playing “Reflections,” an instrumental song where Dylan lays it all down for a screaming crowd.
