Like many couples who decide to adopt, Erick and Connie Custodio have had to get creative when it comes to raising funds. But they’ve also found a way to make their fundraising beneficial for others in their community also in need.
The Custodios have been married for 16 years, and along the way they’ve had to deal with the heartache of health issues and infertility. In fact, Connie came close to death with endometriosis in 2010, which left her infertile. The couple decided to pursue the adoption of their daughter Liana, who is now five.
Now, the family would like to adopt a sibling for Liana and have faith in what God has in store for them as a family: “Our hearts are already filled with gratitude to think of everyone that will be welcoming the child God has in store for us. Lord, as we steadfastly wait for a match, we pray for the birthmother you have been preparing in your good time!” the couple shared on their fundraising page.
And while the couple waits they are looking to help a widow, Ms. Cathy, who lost her husband last year after his eight-year battle with cancer. The widow spent 20 years of her life caring for the sick and dying before caring for her own husband, and now the Custodios want to help her renovate her 100-year-old home.
With a team of volunteers they will spend a day at her home helping to fix it up. In the meantime, they’re looking for sponsors for their service, and any funds raised will go to their adoption fund.
The project is aptly called “Both hands, one for the orphan, one for the widow.” It is a great way of inspiring others to find ways to help themselves while serving others. And is, of course, a great example of what Christians are called to do in Galatians 6:2 “Bear one another’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
