New season of ‘The Chosen’ to begin on Easter Sunday

J-P Mauro - published on 03/26/21

The second season will focus on the developing relationships between the disciples.

The critically acclaimed online series about the life of Christ, The Chosen, is returning for its second season. The first episode is scheduled to release for free viewing on The Chosen app this Easter Sunday, April 4.

To promote the upcoming season, series director Dallas Jenkins hosted a live-streamed talk in January. Jenkins noted that the second season will focus on “how the relationships between the disciples start to develop.”  To illustrate this, Jenkins showed a short clip from the new season, which appears at 17:50 in the below video.

Illuminating biblical figures

One of the most widely hailed aspects of the series, which is on full display in the clip above, is the humanity that it brings to these biblical figures. The apostles were men of their time, complete with flaws and pride. In the scene, James and John are vying for a position of authority, while Simon Peter (the first called) stands with arms folded in challenge.

The scene is injected with a bit of humor as Matthew, a former tax collector, begrudgingly hands out coins so that each man can procure dinner supplies. Although there seems to be friction among the Apostles, they all work to achieve the same goal. This is an important scene because it shows the forming fraternity among these men who are still getting to know each other.

The second season of The Chosen will continue in the first season’s footsteps. Bringing every-day interactions between biblical figures to the fore, the show illuminates the realities of life in the 1st century.

Where to watch

The Chosen is the largest crowdfunded media project ever produced. The first season raised nearly $10 million through online donations and the second season received nearly the same. This year, they are running a “Pay it Forward” system, where viewers are invited to watch for free and asked to donate for someone else to watch as well. All proceeds go towards financing season three, which already has raised $1 million.

The first episode of The Chosen’s second season will air on Easter Sunday, April 4. The seven subsequent episodes will be released each week after Easter. There are eight episodes in total, so get ready for two solid months of high-quality Christian viewing.
