He went from slavery to the priesthood, winning over everyone with his virtue

Pope Francis has recognized the heroic virtue of Father Augustus Tolton, a man born into slavery who eventually became a priest.

With the decree, Father Tolton (1854-1897) is now recognized as venerable, a step along the path of canonization.
